Steven Thompson has criticized Union Saint-Gilloise winger Ousseynou Niang for his playacting during Thursday’s match against Rangers.
The Gers secured a 2-1 victory at Ibrox on January 30, with goals from Nico Raskin and Vaclav Cerny, automatically advancing to the Europa League round of 16.
However, the match saw Niang clash heads with Leon King early on, forcing the Rangers player off the pitch. Later, Thompson slammed Niang for diving and exaggerating his reactions.
Speaking live on BBC Sportsound (January 30, 8:27pm), Thompson remarked, “Niang is looking for an Oscar there. Look, he’s back up now, honest to god. It really drives me crazy.”
Niang’s playacting didn’t sit well with the former Rangers striker, who criticized the behavior of rolling around after a challenge and then quickly getting back up—a common frustration among football fans.
While the Ibrox crowd wasn’t likely bothered, given that Raskin had given Rangers a 1-0 lead with a header just 20 minutes into the game, Niang’s antics didn’t go unpunished.
His side’s equalizer by Franjo Ivanovic was ruled out for offside less than 10 minutes later.
In the end, despite his theatrics, Niang and Union Saint-Gilloise were outdone by Rangers, with the Scottish side getting the better of the Senegalese winger.
It’s unclear why Niang attempted to “win an Oscar,” as Thompson put it, but it certainly didn’t help his team secure a positive result at Ibrox.
