‘I’m disappointed’ – Liverpool prodigy Jayden Danns speaks out after Sunderland transfer twist
The deadline day loan move for Jayden Danns was more complicated than expected.
While Sunderland was thrilled to sign the highly-rated Liverpool striker, their excitement was tempered by the news that Danns is dealing with a back injury that will require some rehabilitation before he can make his debut.
Danns is highly regarded at Liverpool, so much so that he signed a new long-term contract with the club before agreeing to join Sunderland for the rest of the season.
He has made four appearances for Arne Slot’s team this campaign, including a Champions League appearance against PSV Eindhoven.
Sunderland are signing a player with significant potential as they continue their push for promotion. Regis Le Bris’ team currently sits fourth in the Championship, trailing Leeds United and Sheffield United, who occupy the top two spots.
Securing a striker to bolster their promotion efforts was a key priority for Kristjaan Speakman and Sunderland’s recruitment team during the winter transfer window.
After missing out on players like Ben Brereton Diaz, Tom Cannon, and Marcus Edwards to other clubs, landing Danns was a much-needed boost.
However, the 19-year-old will have to wait before contributing to his new team. During his medical, a back injury was discovered, and he will need to return to Liverpool’s training facility to begin his rehabilitation.
While it’s a temporary setback, Danns is excited to be joining Sunderland. He had offers from other Championship clubs, including Hull City and Blackburn Rovers, but chose Sunderland after doing his research on the club.
He said: “This is my first loan move and a chance to prove myself, so I’m very appreciative of the opportunity and grateful to the club for placing their faith in me. I’ve done my research, and the team is incredible, so this feels like the right step.
“I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to do that right away, but I’m proud to join the club, and I will work hard during this time to ensure I can return and make an impact.”
Danns earned a winners’ medal in last season’s EFL Cup final at Wembley, where Liverpool defeated Chelsea, and he scored twice in an FA Cup win over Southampton shortly afterward.
Having joined Liverpool at the age of eight, he last scored for the Reds a month ago in a 4-0 win over Accrington Stanley, showcasing the potential Sunderland hopes will help them in their promotion bid. This explains why they were willing to wait until deadline day to secure him.
Speakman said: “Jayden is an extremely talented player who fits the profile we were looking for. His availability was always going to be determined late in the window due to Liverpool’s schedule and the high demand for him, so we worked tirelessly to secure the player.
“It’s unfortunate that the medical revealed an issue requiring him to take a period of rest. Despite this, he remained highly motivated to join Sunderland, and we’ve agreed to work with Liverpool to ensure he can join us at a later date.
We’re excited to work with him and look forward to supporting him during this time.”
