For much of the past month, it seemed that Tottenham Hotspur would remain relatively quiet in the transfer market. Aside from young AntonÃn Kinský, who joined from Slavia Prague for £12.5m on January 5, the North London club made no further additions to their injury-depleted squad.
However, in the final days of the window, Daniel Levy and his team sprung into action. Although a surprise £70m bid for Marc Guehi was rejected, they were able to secure two exciting signings.
The headline addition is undoubtedly Mathys Tel, who arrives on a short-term loan with a £45m option to buy. Yet, the most essential addition might be Kevin Danso, who also joined on a short-term loan, but with an obligation to purchase for £20.9m.
While the talented centre-back is an excellent signing, he will need to hit the ground running to even approach the valuation of one of his new teammates.
Why Spurs Signed Danso
Before the deal was confirmed, not many Spurs fans were calling for the club to sign Danso specifically. However, just because he wasn’t widely known prior to his move doesn’t mean he’s a lackluster player.
In fact, it appears Levy and Co. have secured a highly talented centre-back, experienced but with room to grow. Danso, who hails from Voitsberg, has accumulated 128 appearances for RC Lens – a club that played in the Champions League last season and finished second in Ligue 1 the year prior – along with 44 for FC Augsburg, 33 for Fortuna Düsseldorf, and 10 for Southampton.
Moreover, he has earned 24 senior caps for Austria, and at just 26 years old, he’s not expected to hit his peak until next season, according to research by The Athletic in 2021.
Along with his experience, the right-footed powerhouse adds a physical presence, standing at an impressive 6’3″ and boasting “rapid recovery pace,” according to football analyst Ben Mattinson.
Overall, Danso looks set to be a fantastic addition to Postecoglou’s squad. However, his current valuation still falls short of one of his defensive colleagues.
The Spurs Defender Worth Millions More Than Danso
To get straight to the point, the defender we’re referring to is Cristian Romero.
Described as an “unbelievable” centre-back by teammate Micky van de Ven, Romero initially joined the club on a loan-to-buy deal in the summer of 2021 under then-manager Nuno EspÃrito Santo. His permanent move for £42.5m was completed under Antonio Conte, proving to be money well spent. According to Football Transfers, Romero is now valued at €80.7m (around £67.6m), a staggering £46.7m more than what Spurs paid for Danso.
While this valuation is substantial, it’s hard to argue that Romero doesn’t deserve it. When fit, he is immense. For example, per FBref, which compares players across Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League, and the Europa League, the 26-year-old ranks in the top 3% of centre-backs for non-penalty expected goals plus assists, the top 6% for total shots and passes attempted, the top 10% for non-penalty goals, and the top 11% for tackles and aerial duels won, all per 90 minutes.
Moreover, the former Juventus star is a proven winner, playing a crucial role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory and their two most recent Copa América titles.
While Spurs are excited about the arrival of Danso, he will need to make a significant impact to get anywhere near Romero’s valuation.
