Rangers have begun the process of reshaping the squad to give manager Philippe Clement the opportunity to work with players of his own choice.
Many of the players he inherited were on high wages but offered little value in return. However, a clear strategy is now in place to restore sustained success at Ibrox, with the manager trusted to rebuild the team on the field.
One player who seemed destined to leave was Cyriel Dessers, but after two transfer windows, he remains at Rangers—largely due to his own determination.
Dessers Committed to Staying at Rangers
It has come to light that Dessers had interest from 10 clubs, but all offers were for short-term moves, which Rangers rejected. In the summer, Atlanta United agreed to pay around £4.6 million for the 30-year-old striker, but Dessers turned down the move, standing firm in his decision.
Ahead of Rangers’ Scottish Cup match against Queen’s Park, Dessers made his stance on the speculation clear:
“I’ve had positive talks with Nils Koppen, and I’m very happy to be at Rangers. I didn’t want to leave, but of course, I want to play. I feel I’ve been improving, so there were no major doubts for me.”
Is Rangers Getting Value from Dessers?
With 18 goals and six assists this season, Dessers’ contributions cannot be questioned. Recently, his form has also been on the rise.
While Hamza Igamane has occasionally dropped into a deeper role, their partnership has proven beneficial to the team, with positive results following.
Earlier concerns about Dessers’ overall impact have diminished as his recent performances have shown improvement. His high wages were once an issue, particularly when he was benched in favor of Danilo and Igamane when both were fit.
However, if Dessers continues to play well, contribute, and score, his contract will not be a concern, nor will his decision to stay and fight for his place in the squad.
