BREAKING; Tottenham leading race for “extraordinary” midfielder, planning £21m offer
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly in the lead to sign an “extraordinary” midfielder this summer, with a £21m bid in the works.
Tottenham’s Focus on Squad Reinforcement Amid ongoing injury challenges, Tottenham sought to strengthen their squad in the latter part of the January transfer window. Their most notable arrival was Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel, who joined on loan until the season’s end.
Spurs also made a £70m bid for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, which was rejected, and have been in talks to sign Lille striker Jonathan David, whose contract expires in the summer.
It’s evident that manager Ange Postecoglou is determined to bolster several positions to enhance the team’s competitiveness in the Premier League next season, after a disappointing campaign so far.
According to Football Insider, Postecoglou has identified defensive midfield as a key area for strengthening, and Tottenham are preparing to trigger the £21m release clause in Johnny Cardoso’s contract with Real Betis.
Spurs have an edge over other suitors, having secured a first-refusal option for the midfielder as part of the deal that saw Giovani Lo Celso join Real Betis. Aston Villa are also interested, but Tottenham’s priority option puts them ahead in the race.
The deal is expected to be straightforward if the release clause is activated in June, with no anticipated issues in agreeing personal terms with the highly regarded 23-year-old.
Cardoso’s Impressive Form in La Liga Given Postecoglou’s interest in a defensive midfielder, Cardoso could be the ideal addition, as his performances for Real Betis have been outstanding over the past year.
Defensively, the American ranks in the 98th percentile for interceptions per 90 minutes, the 95th percentile for clearances, and the 86th percentile for aerial duels won among his positional peers.
Cardoso’s talent has earned him the title of “extraordinary” from Betis president Angelo Haro, and he has been a vital player for the club this season, starting the last seven matches in La Liga.
Although Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has faced criticism from fans this season, the decision to include a priority option for Cardoso when selling Lo Celso could prove to be a brilliant move.
