Abdoulaye Doucoure was sent off after triggering a confrontation at the conclusion of Everton’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Wednesday night.
James Tarkowski’s 98th-minute equalizer capped off a thrilling final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park.
Beto gave Everton an early lead against Liverpool, but Alexis MacAllister quickly leveled the score, and Mohamed Salah put Liverpool ahead in the second half.
However, after a prolonged VAR review deep into stoppage time, Tarkowski’s goal was allowed to stand, igniting wild celebrations at Goodison.
Once the final whistle blew, Doucoure, 32, approached the Liverpool supporters to celebrate in front of them, which led to a furious reaction from Curtis Jones, who was also shown a red card.
Keith Hackett, a former Premier League and FIFA-listed referee, criticized Doucoure’s behavior following the match.
Doucoure’s actions not only resulted in his red card but also caused a tense situation in the away section, with reports of Liverpool fans throwing objects onto the pitch.
Jones was sent off, and Liverpool manager Arne Slot, along with his assistant Sipke Hulshoff, also received red cards.
Hackett supported referee Michael Oliver’s decision.
“Doucoure foolishly chose to celebrate in front of the Liverpool fans, which sparked a confrontation,” Hackett told Goodison News. “He rightly received a second yellow card and was sent off by Michael Oliver.”
Tensions flared after the match between the two sides, leading to multiple red cards.
Which games will Doucoure miss for Everton?
Doucoure did not receive a straight red card from Oliver.
He had been booked earlier in the first half for a reckless challenge on Liverpool’s Conor Bradley.
As a result, despite the chaos Doucoure caused, he will only miss Everton’s upcoming Premier League match against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday, February 15.
It remains unclear whether the FA will impose further sanctions on Doucoure, though this seems unlikely, as both Oliver and VAR were fully aware of the situation, and apart from his celebrations, Doucoure didn’t engage in any actions that would warrant additional punishment.
