BREAKING; Premier League release statement to explain Liverpool VAR penalty decision against Wolves
Liverpool were initially awarded a second penalty against Wolves, but the decision was later overturned by VAR.
Liverpool’s second-half penalty against Wolverhampton Wanderers was rescinded after it was determined that Emmanuel Agbadou had not made contact with Diogo Jota.
With the score at 2-0 in favor of Liverpool at Anfield, Jota went down in the box, prompting referee Simon Hooper to award a penalty.
However, after receiving advice to review the decision on the pitch-side monitor, Hooper checked the replays and reversed his call, ruling that no penalty should be given.
Agbadou, however, was forced off with an injury following the challenge on Jota.
A statement from the Premier League has clarified why the penalty was overturned. The @PLMatchCentre account, which provides real-time explanations of VAR decisions, posted: “VAR reviewed the referee’s penalty decision for a challenge by Agbadou on Jota and concluded that no contact had been made by Agbadou.
As a result, the referee was advised to review the footage. Following the review, the original decision was overturned, and play resumed with a drop ball.”
Luis Diaz gave Liverpool the lead in the first half, and Mohamed Salah extended their advantage with a penalty after Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa fouled Diaz.
Salah later had a second goal disallowed for offside in the second half, followed by the overturned penalty decision. Matheus Cunha then pulled one back for Wolves, bringing the score to 2-1.
