‘I don’t have any sympathy cards’ – Ange Postecoglou’s brutal response to Man United question
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou showed no sympathy for Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim after he was forced to include eight young players on the bench during their 1-0 loss to Spurs on Sunday.
United were hit hard by injuries and illness leading up to the match, leaving Victor Lindelof as the only senior substitute for the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Amorim’s bench included Elyh Harrison, Harry Amass, Tyler Fredricson, Jack Fletcher, Sekou Kone, Jack Moorhouse, and Chido Obi, with Ayden Heaven, recently signed from Arsenal, also named.
Amorim was hesitant to make substitutions during the match, only bringing on Obi in the final minutes to make his debut, replacing Casemiro in the 91st minute.
While Spurs have also faced injury struggles, they have started to regain key players, including James Maddison, who scored the decisive goal on Sunday.
Postecoglou, who has come under fire in recent weeks over Spurs’ injury woes, responded sharply when asked if he felt sympathy for Amorim in his post-match press conference.
“If I check my office, I don’t have any sympathy cards from other managers, so that hasn’t happened,” Postecoglou remarked. “There’s definitely a few.
“I saw Ruben with players out of position and kids on the bench. Well, welcome to my world. But that’s just one game. Try doing that for two months.
“Do that for two months. Any club. Do that for two months. I thought Man United did well considering everything, and we’ve had our own good moments too, like beating Liverpool during this stretch.”
