Sunderland fans have been eagerly awaiting Romaine Mundle’s return to action for three months, but they had to wait a little longer on Monday night.
The winger was on the bench for Sunderland’s trip to Elland Road to face Leeds United, but he remained an unused substitute throughout the game.
Frustration grew among fans with Regis Le Bris over his delayed substitutions and the choices he made in the game.
Mundle is certainly a player who could make a difference for Sunderland, so why wasn’t he used on Monday, and will he be featured in the lineup this Saturday?
Mundle’s Absence Explained
Regis Le Bris spoke to the press (via Sunderland’s YouTube channel) and provided an explanation for Mundle’s absence from the field. When asked why Mundle didn’t come on against Leeds, Le Bris said: “He should be okay [for Saturday].
For Leeds, it was just too short notice. It’s not just about playing minutes; it was a tough game, with a strong environment both in and out of possession.
He wasn’t ready for that, but with another week of preparation, he should be fine.”
Le Bris was later asked again about Mundle’s fitness for the upcoming fixture, to which he confirmed that the 21-year-old is fully fit and ready to play. He added: “No, he is ready. We didn’t want to rush him for Leeds due to the intensity, but now he’s fine.”
It remains to be seen whether Mundle will be included in the starting lineup, but it could be a wise move to bring him in now.
Time for Mundle to Return and for Le Fee to Shift
If Mundle is fully fit, he should immediately return to Sunderland’s best XI. Before his injury, he was in exceptional form and was Sunderland’s most dangerous and impressive player.
The team has greatly missed him since, and although Tommy Watson briefly stepped in, his injury has created another setback.
This has forced Le Bris to play Enzo Le Fee out of position on the left wing.
Currently, with Chris Rigg needing a rest and Jobe Bellingham close to suspension, this weekend’s clash against Hull City presents the perfect opportunity to make changes.
With Mundle on the left, Le Fee could move back to his preferred playmaker role in the middle, allowing Rigg to rest and easing the pressure on Bellingham in midfield.
