Wolves manager Vitor Pereira praised his team’s “spirit” after their 1-0 win over Bournemouth on the south coast, which saw them move five points clear of 18th-placed Ipswich in the Premier League standings. The victory marked their sixth win of the season.
It was an ideal weekend for Wolves, as the three teams below them in the league all suffered damaging defeats, giving Pereira’s side a comfortable cushion as they enter a period with more favorable fixtures.
Reflecting on the match, Pereira said, “It was important for us. It’s never easy to come here and take points.
I’ve seen many teams come here and lose by more than just 1-0. Bournemouth are a strong team, but we came with the determination to earn these three points.
I know it’s crucial for them to get points in their bid for the Champions League, but for us, it’s about surviving and moving away from the position we’re in.”
He added, “I believe that with a few more points, we’ll show even better quality. But overall, I’m happy.”
The turning point in the game came when Bournemouth defender Illia Zabarnyi was sent off for a high challenge on Rayan Ait-Nouri after a VAR review.
Just five minutes later, Matheus Cunha scored to give Wolves the lead, marking his fourth consecutive goal in all competitions.
Wolves had several opportunities to seal the win in the second half, but their inability to convert chances made for a tense finish. However, they held on for the crucial three points.
Pereira continued, “I’m happy with the team’s spirit, especially with how they maintained emotional balance, even though we had an extra player.
Often, when a team goes a man up, they lose balance and structure, but we kept our shape.
We waited for the right moments to create chances, and in the second half, we had two or three good opportunities to score again.”
He also emphasized, “It’s not just the defenders; the whole team needs to stay compact.
They have to understand when to press and when to wait. Bournemouth rely on a lot of long passes, and if you’re not well-coordinated, it can be a big problem because they have fast and powerful players, and they score a lot of goals.”
Wolves return to Premier League action on Tuesday, when they host Marco Silva’s Fulham at Molineux. They were defeated 2-0 at home by Crystal Palace in their last match.
