Kemar Roofe is back in the Championship nearly six years after leaving Leeds United, making a surprising move to Derby County on a free transfer.
While Leeds focus on their own promotion push this season, they’ll be hoping for some help from other teams in the division.
The Whites are watching for dropped points from Sheffield United, Burnley, and Sunderland, with their own fate in their hands after facing Sunderland and then Sheffield United in February’s final games.
In a noteworthy development outside of the transfer window, Derby County strengthened their attack by signing former Leeds striker Kemar Roofe.
John Eustace secured Roofe on a free transfer until the end of the season at Pride Park.
Roofe, who was a favorite under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds, spent his final season at Elland Road in 2018/19, scoring 15 goals, including four against Derby, with three of those coming at Pride Park.
Leeds Hopes for April 9th Favor from Roofe and Derby
Although it’s unrealistic to expect a late February free-agent signing to drastically impact a team’s end-of-season form, Roofe’s Championship pedigree could make a difference if he finds his best form again.
From a Leeds perspective, though, the ideal scenario would be for Roofe to have a standout performance on April 9th.
That night, Derby will host Burnley, just 24 hours after Leeds face Middlesbrough, with Derby fighting to stay in the league.
A victory for Derby over the Clarets would not only boost their survival hopes but also help Leeds maintain their distance at the top of the table.
