Ipswich Town’s struggles at home continued as Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur triumphed 4-1 over the beleaguered Tractor Boys on Saturday.
Kieran McKenna’s side has only secured one Premier League win at Portman Road this season, and this defeat, compounded by Wolverhampton Wanderers’ big victory against AFC Bournemouth, pushed them deeper into the relegation battle.
Ipswich now find themselves five points adrift of Wolves, who sit in the crucial 17th position.
However, there were still a few positives for McKenna to take from the game, despite another disappointing home loss.
Ipswich’s Bright Spots Against Spurs
Ipswich actually registered more shots on goal than Spurs, 17 to 10, and created more significant chances, with three to Tottenham’s one. Unfortunately, these efforts didn’t translate into a positive result.
One of the highlights was Omari Hutchinson, who managed to pull one back for Ipswich with a stunning strike late in the first half.
Hutchinson also delivered three key passes during the match, attempting to carve out more opportunities for his side before a late collapse allowed Spurs to take all three points.
Jack Clarke impressed on the left wing, providing the assist for Hutchinson’s goal, while Liam Delap showed his usual energy up front, even though he couldn’t find the back of the net.
Defensive Woes
Despite the attacking efforts, Ipswich’s defense was vulnerable throughout the match, especially down the left side where Heung-min Son repeatedly caused problems, twisting the defense with ease.
Ipswich’s Biggest Underperformer Against Spurs
While Jacob Greaves struggled, he at least managed to complete the full 90 minutes, unlike Ben Godfrey, who had a particularly rough time at the back.
Godfrey was at fault for both of Spurs’ first-half goals, with Son repeatedly outmaneuvering the former Everton defender, setting up Brennan Johnson for an easy finish.
Godfrey’s nightmare first half led to McKenna substituting him at halftime. The 27-year-old failed to win a single tackle or aerial duel, completing just six accurate passes while struggling under constant pressure.
This wasn’t the first time Godfrey was pulled off early; he was also substituted during Ipswich’s heavy 6-0 loss to Manchester City in January.
Godfrey’s poor performance against elite opposition highlights concerns over his ability to cope with top-tier attackers, having conceded seven goals in just 109 minutes against Manchester City and Spurs, along with other negative statistics.
McKenna will likely turn to Axel Tuanzebe once his suspension ends, as Godfrey hasn’t shown the form to warrant regular first-team selection.
For Ipswich to have any chance of survival, they cannot afford more defensive slip-ups, and McKenna may need to drop Godfrey to give his side a fighting chance.
