Brendan Rodgers has shared his thoughts on Philippe Clement’s departure following his dismissal as Rangers manager last night.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Celtic’s clash with Aberdeen at Celtic Park on Tuesday, the Hoops boss expressed his disappointment over the Belgian’s exit.
“As with any manager, I’m always disappointed when someone loses their job,” Rodgers said. “Philippe was in the role for a period of time, and I feel for him as a coach.
We all understand the demands here—you need to win consistently. But it’s never nice to see a fellow manager leave their position.
“Philippe showed his quality when he arrived at Rangers. He’s not only a good coach but also a proven winner, having secured titles in the past.
We all know the pressures that come with the job. For us at Celtic, handling that pressure has been crucial.
“We didn’t start last season as strongly as we would have liked when I returned, particularly in terms of consistency and performance. When Philippe came in, Rangers initially had a strong run.
But once we found our rhythm, we managed the pressure really well. From that point, we continued to grow, and credit goes to the players for their resilience and consistent performances.”
Rodgers also highlighted Clement’s broader managerial credentials, adding: “I’ve seen his work outside of Rangers as well, and his track record speaks for itself.
Rangers hired him because they believed in his abilities, and that’s why he got the job.”
Clement’s tenure at Ibrox came to an end following Rangers’ 2-0 home defeat to St Mirren on Saturday. The loss proved to be decisive, with the club parting ways with the former Genk, Club Brugge, and Monaco boss on Sunday evening.
During his time in charge, Clement guided Rangers to League Cup success in 2023, defeating Aberdeen 1-0 in the final.
