Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has revealed the full extent of a major new injury setback for the team.
Captain Ethan Ampadu is likely to require surgery on his second significant knee injury of the season.
The midfielder sustained the issue during training, affecting a different knee than the one he injured earlier in the campaign. Farke has described the situation as a “big blow” for the Whites.
Ampadu missed Leeds’ 3-1 victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, though he was still involved in the celebrations as his team pulled off a dramatic late comeback to secure the three points.
Farke stated that it’s too early to determine the full extent of the damage, but he suspects it may be a cartilage injury.
“It’s a different knee, but it’s a bit too soon to assess,” Farke said. “It looks like a cartilage issue, and he will likely need surgery. We can’t give a timeframe yet as it depends on how things go.
He will definitely be out for the next few weeks. It’s a big blow for us. Who would have thought he’d suffer two major injuries in one season after not missing a minute last year?”
Farke also hinted that Ampadu’s injury, coming so close to the match, may have contributed to Leeds’ shaky start at Bramall Lane, where they fell behind 1-0 early due to an Illan Meslier own goal.
“It could be one reason we didn’t start well,” he said. “The manager not being in the dugout, the captain with a serious injury—he’s such a key player for the whole group.
Maybe that played a part in us being too nervous at the start. Every detail can influence momentum, and we need to stay focused.”
