Matheus Cunha Faces International Challenge to Match Vinicius Junior
Cunha is highly regarded in Brazil, but he hasn’t received a call-up to the national team since 2023, a situation that has been tough for the player.
The Wolves forward reflected on the disappointment of missing out on the 2022 World Cup, but with the 2026 tournament in view, Cunha has a clear target to aim for.
While Brazil’s national team is going through a period of transition, struggling with inconsistent form and a decline in status, the Selecao boasts an emerging group of talented players who could soon include Cunha again.
In an interview with Vamo Futebol editor Rogerio Amaral Junior, we discussed Cunha’s prospects of being a key player in Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad.
We asked Rogerio if Cunha could become an important part of the 2026 Brazil squad.
“If he maintains his good form, yes. But he won’t be the main star,” the experienced journalist explained.
“Brazil currently sees Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, and Rodrygo as its top players.”
However, Rogerio did offer a pathway for Cunha to get closer to the likes of Vinicius Junior within the national team.
“I believe that Cunha can not only make the 2026 World Cup squad but also be a starter. But for that to happen, he will need to perform well for Brazil, not just for Wolves,” Rogerio explained.
While Cunha’s performances at Molineux are recognized in Brazil, Rogerio emphasized the importance of proving oneself at the international level to secure a spot in the national team squad.
Currently, Cunha has yet to score or assist for Brazil and has not featured in a major tournament, apart from his participation in the 2021 Olympic Games.
Cunha’s Brazil Success Doesn’t Depend on Wolves’ Future
While Rogerio made it clear that Cunha needs to establish himself with the national team, the journalist offered some reassurance for Wolves.
Many players who perform well outside European competitions often seek transfers to enhance their international status. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case for Cunha, as Rogerio explained the steps Cunha must take to boost his international career.
“Not at the moment,” Rogerio responded when asked if Cunha could reach the level of influence of players like Vinicius or Rodrygo.
“For that to happen, he really needs to score goals for the national team. In Brazil, people pay a lot of attention to what players do in the national team, so much so that even Vinicius Junior faces some criticism for being better at Real Madrid than with Brazil.”
“If Cunha starts scoring goals and playing well for Brazil, he could become a key figure,” Rogerio added.
The message is clear for Cunha to reach the level of national icons currently leading the Brazil squad: he must make an impact with his country. According to Rogerio, Cunha’s domestic form or a potential lucrative move does not necessarily determine his World Cup chances.
To establish himself as a key player, Cunha must prove himself on the international stage, with his success for Brazil being far more significant than his club form.
