Nuno Espirito Santo’s candid comments about Arsenal left Martin Keown embarrassed after the Gunners’ frustrating 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Arsenal were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw at the City Ground, a result that saw them fall further behind in the Premier League title race, now trailing leaders Liverpool by 13 points.
THE BIGGER PICTURE Arsenal were without key players, including Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, and Bukayo Saka, leaving Mikel Arteta with limited attacking options.
In response, midfielder Mikel Merino was used as a makeshift striker, especially after his brace in a win over Leicester City.
However, his presence did little to inspire confidence, as Arsenal managed only one shot on target during the entire match.
WHAT NUNO SAID
Nuno’s decision to switch to a back four against Arsenal raised eyebrows, especially after his team had played with a more defensive back five in their previous match against Fulham.
On TNT Sports’ post-match show, when Keown asked why Nuno opted for a back four, the manager explained that he felt no additional defensive cover was necessary due to Arsenal’s lack of a recognized striker.
“As Arsenal doesn’t have a striker… they didn’t play in those positions,” Santo said bluntly. “There’s no need for an extra body, so the overload will be in midfield, it’s about containing the midfield.”
WHAT NEXT FOR ARSENAL?
With just two wins from their last five games, Arsenal’s momentum appears to be fading, and their title hopes are slipping further away.
Meanwhile, Liverpool continues their strong pursuit of a record-equalling 20th league title. Arsenal’s next challenge comes at Old Trafford against Manchester United on March 9, followed by a crucial Champions League clash with PSV in the round of 16 on Tuesday evening.
