After being thrashed 4-0 by Brentford the previous week, this match seemed like Leicester’s last real chance to show they could mount a survival push. However, it was another disappointing display.
Fans felt particularly sympathetic for Mads Hermansen, who couldn’t do anything to prevent yet another defensive disaster.
Jannik Vestergaard made two costly mistakes, leading to two goals in the first half, and by that point, the game was essentially over.
Leicester were defeated 2-0 by West Ham United, and now, heading into March 19th, they find themselves five points adrift of safety in the Premier League.
With this in mind, here’s a look at what could unfold at the King Power Stadium over the next month.
Leicester City’s Losing Streak Continues
Following the West Ham defeat, Leicester have now lost 11 of their last 12 Premier League matches, with just one win over Tottenham Hotspur.
On paper, Brentford and West Ham were among the easier fixtures Leicester had left for a while.
Due to the international break, Leicester will only play two matches in March, but it’s hard to see them earning any points from either.
They face Chelsea on the 9th and then Manchester United on the 16th.
Considering Leicester’s struggles, particularly in their loss to West Ham—who have had their own issues this season—it’s highly unlikely they’ll manage to get anything from games against two of the ‘big six’, even with Manchester United’s current poor form.
Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Job at Risk
With likely losses against Chelsea and Manchester United on the horizon, there seems to be no way Ruud van Nistelrooy can keep his job.
Leicester fans have repeatedly criticized Van Nistelrooy after another dismal performance on February 27th, and that frustration will likely intensify if they lose to Chelsea and Manchester United.
By that point, Van Nistelrooy would have lost 13 of his last 14 Premier League matches, with just two wins in 16 games. Even Steve Cooper had a better record than that.
It’s almost certainly too late to salvage the season, and due to financial constraints, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a caretaker manager—likely Andy King—take charge for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.
Leicester City Owner Finally Speaks Out
It has been years since Leicester’s owner, ‘Top’, gave a proper interview or addressed the fans directly.
However, with protests at King Power Stadium and fan unrest at an all-time high, it’s clear that ‘Top’ will need to make a public statement soon.
While Van Nistelrooy’s appointment was clearly a mistake, the root of Leicester’s problems lies at board level, rather than with the manager.
The club’s leadership will need to confront this issue urgently, especially if the losses continue and a managerial change becomes necessary.
The communication between the club and its supporters has been poor for years, and it’s high time for a change.
