“Leeds Blunder as Farke Rages over reckless club FLOP behind SHAMEFUL Portsmouth defeat: Refereeing or Self-Destruction to Blame for Portsmouth Shock?
Daniel Farke had every right to be furious after Leeds United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Sunday.
The loss, their first in the Championship since November, came courtesy of a Colby Bishop goal and saw Leeds’ lead at the top of the table slip away. This defeat, combined with the previous weekend’s draw against West Brom at Elland Road, has allowed Sheffield United to draw level with Farke’s side, though Leeds remain in first place due to a better goal difference.
With Burnley now just two points behind, Leeds face a tense finish to the Championship season as they battle to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Farke’s anger over Meslier incident in Portsmouth loss
While Farke is likely to have been displeased with his team’s performance and probably addressed the issues in the dressing room, he will also feel that Leeds could have gotten something from the game if certain refereeing decisions had gone in their favor.
Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post observed Farke’s frustration on the touchline after Portsmouth’s Connor Ogilvie challenged Illan Meslier in the box just before the end of the first half.
Farke believed Ogilvie’s tackle on Meslier was reckless, although Smyth suggested that the goalkeeper might have exaggerated the incident. “Ogilvie slides in on Meslier, who goes down. Not a yellow,” Smyth wrote on X (9 March). “Farke going mad on the touchline. Meslier is up already. Free-kick only. Unsure how much contact there was, to be honest, or if the keeper made a meal of it.”
Leeds have no one to blame but themselves
Leeds will also feel aggrieved not to have been awarded a penalty for a foul on Dan James by Matt Ritchie in the first half. However, the result ultimately rests on the team’s own shoulders after a subpar performance at Fratton Park.
The lackluster display raises the question of whether the players underestimated Portsmouth, given their lower position in the table. Leeds should have been aware that John Mousinho’s side has a strong home record, losing just once in their previous 11 league games before hosting Leeds on Sunday.
