Neil Warnock was far from pleased as Leeds United suffered a disappointing defeat to Portsmouth on Sunday.
The Whites made the trip to Fratton Park on March 9, where they tasted their first Championship loss since late November, as Colby Bishop’s second-half strike handed Pompey a 1-0 victory.
Leeds had their chances, with Joel Piroe missing two clear opportunities, one in each half.
Junior Firpo also squandered two excellent chances, but the result ultimately hinged on one moment that particularly frustrated Warnock.
Warnock Slams Meslier for Costly Mistake Against Portsmouth
Illan Meslier has been under heavy scrutiny this season for a series of goalkeeping blunders.
His error against Sunderland drew the most criticism, but he has continued to frustrate supporters with lapses in concentration.
Against Portsmouth, it was another mistake that stood out. As Bishop broke through on goal, Meslier rushed off his line but hesitated, allowing the striker to chip the ball over him and score.
The frustration grew as replays revealed Meslier’s indecision—he made a forward run, then paused and stepped back, clearly unsure of his actions.
Warnock pointed this out during Sky Sports’ coverage, voicing his disappointment with the keeper’s lack of conviction. “I just think he could have come out the first time,” Warnock said.
“If his positioning had been closer to the edge of the box, I think he would have got to it easily. I was disappointed with the goal from his point of view.”
Leeds United’s Lackluster Performance Against Portsmouth
It was clear that Leeds didn’t perform at their best at Fratton Park, with the atmosphere and physicality of the home side clearly affecting them.
They could have been awarded a penalty in the first half after a foul on Dan James, but that shouldn’t be used as an excuse for their overall performance.
Piroe missed two big chances, including a second-half opportunity when he had an open goal after goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid was caught out of position.
At times, teams need to rely on their goalkeeper to keep them in the game when the attack isn’t firing, but Meslier failed to provide that crucial support in this instance.
In the end, Leeds’ performance simply wasn’t good enough. Despite Piroe’s missed chances, the team didn’t deserve anything from the match. Questions will undoubtedly be raised about both the striker’s and Meslier’s roles in the defeat. There was always a goal coming for Portsmouth, it was just a matter of whether Leeds could find an equalizer.
