Alexander Isak is poised to start as Newcastle United take on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
The Newcastle forward is relishing the opportunity to face Liverpool – and their star defender Virgil van Dijk.
Newcastle will meet the Reds in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday at 4:30 pm, with Isak expected to lead the attack as the club aims to end its 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.
Arne Slot’s team is currently 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League, prompting Bruno Guimaraes to call them “the best team in the world.”
Despite this, Isak remains unfazed, having scored in three of his five matches against them.
“I really enjoy playing against Liverpool,” Isak said. “They’re not too different from us, both high-pressing and direct teams, which creates plenty of counter-attacking chances, and that’s the kind of game I enjoy.”
“I’ve had good success against them before, I feel confident and enjoy those matches.”
Isak vs. Van Dijk
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is widely regarded as one of the world’s best defenders, while Isak, with 22 goals this season, is emerging as one of the top strikers globally.
The 25-year-old got the better of the Dutch defender in their earlier meeting at St James’ Park, dribbling past him before firing a long-range shot to open the scoring.
When the teams met at Anfield last month, Isak missed the match due to a minor groin injury.
On facing van Dijk, Isak said: “I wouldn’t say I fear anyone – that’s too strong a word. I have a lot of respect for all the players I face, and of course, for Van Dijk and their defense.
“But I always focus on myself. If I play to my best and do the right things, I believe I can help my team succeed.”
