“Everton were denied penalty because….”- Premier League release statement after another Everton penalty overturned by VAR
Everton had a penalty decision overturned at Goodison Park after Beto was fouled by West Ham’s Maximilian Kilman during their Premier League clash.
For the second consecutive home match, Everton were denied a penalty. The Blues thought they had a late opportunity to take control when Beto went down under pressure from Kilman.
Referee Darren Bond initially awarded the penalty but reversed his decision after VAR intervened.
Bond left the pitch to boos from the home crowd, who were still angry over a similar penalty decision that was overturned in the dying moments of their previous home game, a 1-1 draw with Manchester United.
The Premier League’s matchday communications service clarified the situation on X (formerly Twitter), explaining: “VAR reviewed the referee’s penalty decision for a challenge by Kilman on Beto and concluded no foul had occurred, recommending an on-field review. The referee reversed the original call, and play resumed with a drop ball.”
The first half ended goalless, with Jordan Pickford making key saves, including from a Jarrad Branthwaite header that was sent towards his own goal and a dipping half-volley from Jarrod Bowen. At the other end, Alphonse Areola had to push a powerful Jake O’Brien shot wide.
