Wolves manager Vitor Pereira is confident that his decision to move to the Premier League in December was the right one.
After Gary O’Neil was dismissed, Wolves’ hierarchy knew they needed to make the right choice for their next manager.
Pereira took over with the club languishing in 19th place, five points adrift of safety, and without prior Premier League experience following his stint at Al-Shabab.
Although Pereira wasn’t initially among Wolves’ top candidates to replace O’Neil, it quickly became clear that the Portuguese manager was the right fit for the job.
Pereira made an impressive start at Wolves, becoming the first manager to go unbeaten in his first three Premier League games with the club.
The 56-year-old is thoroughly enjoying his time in the West Midlands and even revealed that he spends time socializing with fans in the pub after matches.
While Wolves may have struck gold with their new manager, Pereira feels just as fortunate to be at the club.
“I feel I’ve arrived at the position I’ve worked for my whole life, and this is the happiness I feel right now,” Pereira said, as reported by Express and Star.
“Of course, I’d prefer if our position in the table wasn’t where it is, but I want to build something strong, step by step.”
Speaking to the media, Pereira shared the steps he’s been taking to turn the team’s fortunes around, a plan he is fully committed to seeing through.
“When we arrived, the first goal was to be more consistent defensively – in our play, tactical organization, and set-pieces. Next, we aimed to give the team more tools to create chances and score goals.
“The third step is to understand when to move quickly and when to maintain possession, to control the game not just by defending, but with the ball. It’s all about taking it step by step.”
Pereira has instilled confidence in several Wolves players, a quality he believes is key to leading the team toward better days.
“If the results help the players believe in the ideas we’re putting forward, confidence will follow. The players will trust, and we can connect them both tactically and mentally. Emotionally, too.”
A Turning Point for Wolves Under Pereira
The only criticism of Pereira so far is that Wolves didn’t hire him sooner. As a result, the team is still stuck in 17th place, though there is now a sense of hope for the future, something that has been long awaited.
Both O’Neil and Bruno Lage had their shortcomings, as did Julen Lopetegui, who left after not receiving enough backing from the club’s owners, Fosun.
Now, the owners find themselves in a fortunate position with a passionate manager who is not only improving the squad but is also fully committed to the project.
For Pereira’s tenure to reach its full potential, the club’s hierarchy must continue to support him as his first full season approaches.
