“From Cockroaches to Club Legend: Steve Bull Reveals Wolves’ ‘Horrible’ First Impressions”
Steve Bull marked his 60th birthday on Friday, March 28th, and the Wolves legend took the opportunity to reflect on one particularly ‘scary’ moment after joining the club.
Bull was signed from West Bromwich Albion in 1986 for around £65,000, alongside Andy Thompson. The tough striker quickly became a fan favorite at Molineux, earning admiration for his deadly finishing and fiery presence on the pitch.
From a relatively unknown talent to a club legend, Bull spent 13 years at Wolves, scoring a remarkable 306 goals in 561 appearances. He’s since become a club ambassador and vice-president—an incredible journey considering where he started nearly 40 years ago.
A ‘Scary’ Start at Wolves
When Bull first arrived at Wolves, the club was languishing in the Fourth Division of English football. His first season saw him score 19 goals, narrowly missing out on promotion. Over time, he helped propel Wolves into the Second Division, with the club becoming a fixture at that level as the new century began.
However, his early days at Molineux weren’t all smooth sailing. Bull recalled a ‘scary’ moment when he and Thompson arrived at the club and were greeted by a less-than-pleasant sight. “On our first day, we walked through the corridor and there was water everywhere, cockroaches everywhere. We’d just come from up the road at West Brom and thought, ‘What have we done?'” Bull shared in an interview with the E&S on his 60th birthday.
“But they didn’t want us. It’s their loss and Wolves’ gain.”
A Goal Scorer’s Legacy
Wolves certainly gained a clinical striker in Bull, who had an eye for all kinds of goals—chips, headers, volleys, and even using his physicality to bully defenders. He wasn’t known for technical flair but for being in the right place at the right time.
Bull also revealed an interesting detail from his playing days: he received a £100 bonus for every goal he scored. “I absolutely loved it,” he said. “I’d love to revisit certain games and turn back the clock, but I’ve done my bit now, I’m enjoying my life.”
“My talent was scoring goals. I haven’t got any skill at all, but I banged them in. That was my job, full stop, and I absolutely loved it. Plus, I was on £100 a goal, so I needed to score more goals!”
