“Crystal Palace Shocks Fans with Marc Guehi Update – Is a Transfer to Newcastle United Now Inevitable?
Oliver Glasner has provided a significant update regarding Marc Guehi’s contract situation amid fresh speculation linking the defender to a move to Newcastle United.
Newcastle spent much of last summer pursuing a deal for the England international, but their efforts were unsuccessful as Guehi remained at Selhurst Park.
Financial constraints limited Newcastle’s spending in the summer, and Palace’s high asking price for Guehi ultimately deterred the Magpies from pushing through a deal.
With nearly a year passed since then, Guehi now enters this summer’s transfer window with just one year left on his contract, leaving Palace with a crucial decision: sell him or risk losing him for free.
While Palace could attempt to extend his contract, a recent statement from their manager has cast doubt on that possibility.
Crystal Palace Issues Guehi Contract Update
Ahead of Crystal Palace’s win against Brighton on Saturday— a match Guehi missed due to a red card—Glasner revealed that contract discussions for the defender have not yet started: “We haven’t begun talking about his contract,” Glasner explained.
“The talks have been ongoing for more than two years, even before I arrived. Marc is thinking about what is best for his personal career, and we have to respect that.”
“I don’t know [if he will sign a new deal]. I don’t focus on what will happen in the summer.
On May 26th, I will switch off my phone for a week or two, and then we will see what happens.”
“Everyone knows he’s a great footballer and a fantastic character. But of course, no manager wants to lose their captain.
It will be Marc’s decision, but I know he is fully focused on improving his game and our team. This has no impact on his performances.”
Newcastle United’s Renewed Interest in Guehi
Although Newcastle’s attempts to sign Guehi last summer were unsuccessful, they may now be in a stronger position to make another move.
With more room to maneuver financially and Guehi’s contract situation, Palace could be more inclined to sell.
Sven Botman is the only senior central defender at Newcastle under 30, but injury issues have limited his appearances this season, with just six appearances across all competitions. Guehi, according to The Athletic, remains on the Magpies’ radar.
After serving a one-match suspension this weekend, Guehi will travel to St James’ Park on Wednesday, April 16, when Palace faces Eddie Howe’s Newcastle in the Premier League.
The match, originally scheduled for March 15, was postponed due to Newcastle’s participation in the Carabao Cup final.
Liverpool has also been linked with the 24-year-old, especially with Virgil van Dijk’s future at Anfield uncertain. Van Dijk’s contract expires this summer, leaving the possibility of his departure on a free transfer.
