Jim White has expressed confusion over what unfolded at Leeds United this week.
On Tuesday (April 8), the Whites clinched a crucial 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough, thanks to an early goal from Dan James.
Despite two controversial disallowed goals from Ao Tanaka and Patrick Bamford, Daniel Farke’s side can still take pride in the win, which sees them return to the top of the Championship.
However, White remains perplexed by one specific aspect of the match at Riverside.
White Frustrated After Leeds United’s Win Against Middlesbrough
The traveling Leeds fans were, in the end, thrilled with the result in the North East, particularly as both Burnley and Sheffield United failed to secure victories.
Yet, things could have been far simpler for the Elland Road supporters had the correct decisions been made.
Tanaka was clearly onside before tapping in for what should have been a 2-0 lead, and Bamford’s goal, which was ruled out, would have made it 3-0, further putting the game out of Middlesbrough’s reach.
Had the Championship implemented VAR, Leeds would have secured an easier win rather than barely holding onto a clean sheet.
This situation left White frustrated during his live talkSPORT appearance on April 9 (11:06am), as he believes VAR would have greatly benefited Leeds.
He commented: “Another night showcasing why it’s madness that the Championship still doesn’t use VAR. No VAR in the Championship and we saw moments of controversy for Leeds. Leeds had goals incorrectly disallowed in both halves, making the victory much more tense than it should have been. Would VAR have made a difference? Yes, it likely would have.”
Leeds Left Frustrated by Middlesbrough Decisions
Although Leeds secured the win, the match could have played out very differently. Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough side had opportunities and could have taken a positive result, keeping their playoff hopes alive.
Had the decisions gone in favor of Tanaka and Bamford, the game would have been out of Middlesbrough’s reach, and Farke could have rested key players with just five games remaining in the season.
White strongly advocates for the introduction of VAR in the second tier, and it’s clear that Leeds would have greatly benefited from its presence during the match against Boro.
