Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder found himself embroiled in controversy after his side’s 2-1 defeat to Plymouth Argyle at Home Park, which gave Leeds United a significant boost in their promotion hopes.
The loss means the Blades are now five points behind Leeds in the Championship table, and it was clear that emotions were running high for Wilder.
After the final whistle, Wilder was seen in a heated exchange with Mustapha Bundu and Leeds United loanee Darko Gyabi, following what appeared to be Argyle’s players celebrating in front of Sheffield United supporters.
The confrontation continued as the two teams made their way down the tunnel, with Sky Sports capturing the tense moments. Wilder later explained the incident to reporters on the south coast.
“It wasn’t really anything,” Wilder said. “They were celebrating a big win, coming off the pitch, and unfortunately, our supporters are right next to them in the stand by the tunnel.”
He continued, “I spoke to their manager, who was absolutely fine and understands the situation, as does the referee and the assessor.”
“Emotions run high in football, and I’ve always said that,” Wilder added. “Especially for their players, it was a huge win for them. I’m sure if we had won today, it would have been even more difficult for them to stay in the division.”
Wilder also acknowledged the wider implications of the result:
“That win gives them a fighting chance to stay in the division, and we’ve let another big opportunity slip to close the gap to Leeds and Burnley. We’re not in a great position after a week of disappointing results.”
“We have to accept that and take responsibility for it. We’ll reset on Monday and look to get a positive result on Friday.”
