“Matheus Cunha BREAKING Point? Wolves Boss Victor Pereira Reveals What He ‘Needs’ as Newcastle Prepare £62.5M Raid
Wolves Boss Urges Fans to Support Matheus Cunha Amid Newcastle Transfer Links
Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Vítor Pereira has called on fans to rally behind Matheus Cunha, as speculation grows over a possible summer move to Newcastle United.
Cunha made an impactful return from a four-match suspension on Sunday, scoring off the bench in a 4-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur. His late goal effectively sealed the victory for Wolves, snuffing out Spurs’ hopes after Richarlison’s late strike had threatened a comeback.
However, ahead of the match, Cunha stirred speculation about his future with a cryptic message on social media. The 25-year-old Brazilian wrote, “(It’s) time to be happy. I will follow my dreams, not yours… so stay cool.” The post was quickly deleted but only fueled ongoing rumors, especially with reports from the Daily Mail suggesting Newcastle are monitoring his situation.
Cunha is understood to have a £62.5 million release clause, and any approach from Newcastle could depend on their qualification for the UEFA Champions League. There are questions among fans about how Cunha would fit into Eddie Howe’s system, particularly given his versatile attacking role and occasional stint in midfield.
Despite some concerns about his temperament—highlighted by the recent suspension—there’s no questioning Cunha’s talent. Wolves boss Pereira praised his attitude and urged supporters to show him appreciation as the season nears its conclusion.
“I didn’t speak with him about the social media post,” Pereira said after the win over Spurs. “I can’t speak to everyone individually. What matters is that Cunha is a fantastic player, and he showed that today.
“He came on and helped the team with the right attitude. He’s committed to his teammates. He’s a special player and, like all of us, he needs love and support. He needs to feel valued by those who recognize his work.
“When he stepped onto the pitch, he was focused on the team, not himself. He’s part of this family. I understand the supporters’ concerns, but we’re stronger when we stick together.”
Cunha Reflects on Loyalty and Ambition
Before his recent social media post, Cunha had already spoken openly about his future. The former RB Leipzig and Atlético Madrid forward revealed he turned down offers during the January transfer window, citing Wolves’ relegation battle as the reason.
“I had several offers, but I wouldn’t have felt right leaving,” Cunha said. “You can’t control everything, but I couldn’t walk away from the club in the middle of a tough period.
“Now, we’re close to achieving our goal of survival. But I’ve also made it clear—I’m ready for the next step. I want to compete for titles and push for bigger things. I believe I have the potential to do that.”
