Leeds United Eye Premier League Return as Stoke Test Awaits
Leeds United could secure automatic promotion back to the Premier League today—if they manage to outperform Sheffield United’s result. With all 24 Championship teams in action, the stakes are high as Leeds welcome 15th-placed Stoke City to Elland Road.
Stoke, now under the management of Mark Robins, have shown signs of improvement, picking up three wins in their last five matches and distancing themselves from relegation danger. However, Robins may be forced to contend with several key absences. Ben Gibson, Jordan Thompson, and Eric Bocat are among six potential absentees as the clock ticks toward the 3pm kickoff.
A win for Leeds would see them climb to 94 points—eight ahead of Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United, who take on Burnley later in the evening.
Robins Admits Stoke Need “Luck” to Upset Leeds
Despite Stoke’s recent resurgence, a trip to Elland Road remains a daunting task. While Robins’ experience has helped stabilize the Potters, their overall form this season has been underwhelming.
Still, back-to-back wins and a seven-point cushion above the relegation zone will allow Stoke to play with some freedom. Speaking to the Stoke Sentinel, Robins acknowledged the challenge ahead.
“It’s a tough game, no doubt about it,” he said. “We’re going to have to be really good, have a bit of luck, and enjoy the occasion. Then we’ll turn our attention to our final home game on Friday.”
History Favors Farke Over Robins
While Robins is one of the most experienced managers in the Championship, his head-to-head record with Leeds boss Daniel Farke doesn’t inspire confidence for Stoke fans. In six previous meetings—dating back to Farke’s time at Norwich—Robins has secured just one win. That victory came in April 2024 during a rare stumble in Leeds’ promotion push, with Coventry defeating Farke’s side 2-1.
Robins’ previous work with Coventry has been widely praised, and although his tenure there ended early this season after a poor start, his legacy remains strong—something Frank Lampard, his successor, has built upon.
As Leeds prepare for what could be a decisive day, all eyes will be on Elland Road to see if Farke’s side can take a major step back into the top flight—and whether Robins has one last surprise in store.
