Patterson Endures Tough Outing as Everton Fall to Chelsea
Nathan Patterson had a night to forget as Everton suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
David Moyes named the right-back in the starting lineup on 26 April as the Toffees aimed to bounce back from their recent loss to Manchester City.
However, both Patterson and striker Beto struggled to make an impact, prompting Moyes to make several changes around the 60-minute mark, bringing off Patterson, Beto, and Jack Harrison.
Before being substituted, Patterson nearly gifted Chelsea a second goal with a poor back pass, but the score remained 1-0.
Patterson’s Error Nearly Proves Costly
Former defender Stuart Pearce criticised Patterson for a dangerously under-hit pass to Jordan Pickford, which almost allowed Nicolas Jackson to grab his second of the match.
Speaking on talkSPORT (26 April, 13:44), Pearce said, “I think it ended up being Patterson who played the final pass back to his goalkeeper that was woefully short. Pickford just managed to recover the situation.”
Pearce credited Pickford for reacting quickly to prevent Chelsea from extending their lead.
Major Squad Changes Expected This Summer
With another disappointing result, it’s clear Moyes will be pushing for major investment in the squad this summer. While he’s done a solid job since taking over from Sean Dyche, Everton will need significant reinforcements if they are to break into the top half of the Premier League table.
Moyes proved his credentials at West Ham by leading them to a Conference League title, but a deeper squad is required at Everton to reach similar heights.
Since Moyes’ appointment, Jake O’Brien has often filled in at right-back, though he’s naturally a centre-half.
Patterson, once seen as a promising talent, has been hampered by injuries and inconsistency, making a summer departure a real possibility.
Veteran Ashley Young also appears to be past his peak, and reinforcements in defence are looking increasingly necessary. With Michael Keane’s contract nearing its end, a defensive overhaul may be imminent at Bramley-Moore Dock.
The Friedkin Group (TFG) will need to back Moyes in the transfer market, as upgrades are needed across the pitch to build a competitive side for next season.
