“Dan Neil Breaks Silence on Sunderland’s Struggles and Delivers Shocking Message Before the Play-Offs
Sunderland suffered their fourth consecutive defeat in the Championship, losing 2-0 to Oxford United, but captain Dan Neil remains optimistic about the team’s chances in the upcoming play-offs.
Despite the recent run of poor form, Neil expressed confidence that Sunderland can deliver when it matters most next month.
The loss to Oxford saw Régis Le Bris field a starting lineup close to the one he plans to use in the play-offs, but Sunderland struggled to make an impact.
“The last few performances haven’t clicked, and we know we can’t just turn it on and off as a team,” Neil said. “We understand that.
However, there’s no complacency in the squad—we give 100% every day in training. Today, we gave away two sloppy goals from set pieces, and that’s something we need to address.
We can’t afford that in the play-offs; it could cost us right from the start.
We know we haven’t become a bad team overnight, and we’re going to do everything we can over the next few weeks to get back to the level we’re capable of.”
Sunderland has struggled to create chances and find any attacking rhythm recently, but Neil believes the team’s fortunes will improve as partnerships become more settled.
The squad has now headed to Portugal for a week of warm-weather training ahead of their final match of the season against QPR.
“We’ve made a lot of changes in the last few weeks,” Neil explained. “Take Enzo, for example. He’s been coming back from injury and has had to build his fitness, and I missed the game on Monday.
Dennis is just returning from injury too. It’s tough to build cohesion when you’re constantly changing the lineup.
We haven’t had a stable starting XI since February, whereas earlier in the season we had that consistency, and the play was fluid.
It’s nobody’s fault—injuries, suspensions, and managing minutes for the play-offs have all played a part. But we’ll do everything we can to get that fluidity back.”
Neil was encouraged by the return of Dennis, which he believes will give the squad a boost.
“It was great to see Dennis out there today. That’s a big boost for everyone. When the biggest games come, I’m confident we’ll be ready.
That’s not an excuse for today’s performance, but we’ve turned up for all the big games this season and been unlucky at times. We’ll be ready for the play-offs. I’m confident about that.”

After the game, Sunderland held a lengthy meeting in the dressing room, and Neil believes the team will bounce back in time for the play-offs.
“Things were said in the dressing room, and I think that’s a good thing,” he said.
“We don’t have much time before the play-offs, so everyone laid it out there, and that’s positive. I’m not worried at all about the next few weeks.
We haven’t become a bad team overnight, and we didn’t finish fourth by accident—we’re a good team. We know we can beat anyone in this league when we’re on our game.
We’ve shown up in the big games this year, and I have no doubt that we’ll do the same in the play-offs.”
Neil also emphasized the importance of unity as Sunderland prepares for the season’s biggest games.
“We have to stick together, everyone associated with the club. We’ll be ready. Oxford showed just how much this game meant to them.
They achieved their goal today, and we need to look at how they reacted after winning—celebrating their ambitions.
Our ambition is to get promoted, and we still have a huge chance to do that. Their biggest game was today, and ours is in two weeks. We need to take motivation from that.”
