Everton Let Two-Goal Lead Slip in 2-2 Draw with Ipswich Town
Everton squandered a two-goal lead as they were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Ipswich Town in their second-to-last fixture at Goodison Park.
Manager David Moyes expressed frustration after watching his side miss out on a win against the already-relegated visitors.
The Toffees looked on course for a comfortable victory after Beto’s header opened the scoring, followed by Dwight McNeil doubling the lead within the first 35 minutes.
However, Ipswich pulled one back through Julio Enciso’s strike from distance before the break. Despite some promising passages of play in the second half, Everton failed to create enough decisive chances and were punished when George Hirst netted an equaliser with just 11 minutes left.
The result leaves Everton with only one win in their last ten matches and a missed opportunity to climb to 13th in the Premier League standings. Moyes admitted: “I’m disappointed. We couldn’t shake Ipswich off.
We did a lot of good things, tried different player roles, and started the game very well. But their goal just before half-time gave them belief, and we couldn’t find the third goal.”
When asked why his side has repeatedly failed to hold leads — including a similar situation against Manchester United in February — Moyes said: “If we knew the exact answer, we’d fix it. It’s about managing the game better.
For their second goal, we made some poor decisions — unnecessary runs and tackles — and left ourselves open.”
Despite the result, Moyes took some encouragement from the performance. “I told the players I was disappointed not to win, but there are positives in how we’re playing and trying to create chances,” he said. “We didn’t take enough shots in the second half, but we had control for most of the game until the final minutes when they pressed with corners and throws. Their equaliser wasn’t quite a counterattack, but it felt like one.”
