Troy Deeney makes bold Burnley prediction that will infuriate Leeds United faithful
Football pundit Troy Deeney believes Burnley are better positioned than Leeds United to avoid relegation from the Premier League next season. Both clubs secured promotion to the top flight with two games to spare.
Leeds impressed with their attacking prowess throughout the 2024/25 campaign, scoring more goals (95) than any other team across England’s top four divisions. They also set a new club record for points in a single league season and clinched the Championship title in dramatic fashion with a last-minute 2-1 win at Plymouth Argyle. Manor Solomon’s stoppage-time goal secured the title for Leeds on goal difference, edging out Burnley.
While Leeds thrived in attack, Burnley’s strength lay in their defensive solidity. They kept an outstanding 30 clean sheets and conceded just 16 goals over the season.
Despite their success, both teams are expected to be among the favourites for relegation next season. In fact, each of the promoted teams from the Championship has been relegated the following year for two consecutive seasons.
Speaking to Sky Sports, former Watford forward Deeney said, “The trend we’ve seen with newly promoted teams is they struggle defensively in the Premier League. Burnley, for me, have the best foundation to succeed next season.
“They will need to bring in more quality, as the gulf in class continues to grow. But based on where things stand, if I had to bet on one team staying up, I’d choose Burnley over Leeds. They know how to keep things tight and stay competitive in games. A lot of teams are beaten before they even step on the pitch these days.”
