Leeds United Eye Premier League Return, But Face PSR Decisions Over Star Player
After two seasons away, Leeds United are set to return to the Premier League next season following a dominant Championship campaign under Daniel Farke.
Their promotion was sealed in emphatic fashion with a 6-0 win over Stoke City on Easter Monday at Elland Road, a moment of redemption after last year’s heartbreaking play-off final loss to Southampton at Wembley.
Backed by the 49ers ownership group, Leeds are expected to invest in the squad to ensure they remain in the top flight for the long haul.
However, there are growing concerns that the club could face challenges under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), despite the increased revenue that comes with promotion.
As a result, the club’s owners may consider offloading one or two players during the summer transfer window to ease financial pressures and create room for further investment.
Leeds Urged to Hold on to Wilfried Gnonto Despite PSR Pressure
Football League World spoke to Leeds United fan and contributor Kris Smith, who named Wilfried Gnonto as the one player the club should not let go, regardless of financial circumstances.
“Oddly enough, promotion could actually put us in a tricky position with PSR,” Smith said. “Two-thirds of our current PSR accounting period has been spent in the EFL, where revenue is significantly lower.
That could push the club toward selling a player who was signed cheaply but now has a high market value.”
Gnonto, signed for a modest fee from FC Zurich in 2022, has attracted strong interest from other clubs since his arrival, with Everton among the suitors.
Smith estimates the Italian winger could now command a fee in the region of £25-30 million.
“From a purely financial standpoint, it makes sense—but from a footballing point of view, it would be a huge mistake,” Smith continued. “He’s just too talented to lose.
Even if PSR gives the club a reason to consider selling, I hope they resist that urge.”
Premier League Return Could Bring Out the Best in Gnonto
Smith also believes that Gnonto, now 21, is more than ready to shine in the Premier League, thanks to the experience he’s gained since Leeds were relegated.
“He proved his quality during our last season in the top flight—he was one of the few bright spots.
Now, with two more years of development, he’s a smarter, more well-rounded attacker and one of our most creative players,” Smith said.
He added that the pace and space available in Premier League matches could suit Gnonto perfectly, making him an even bigger threat than before.
Although PSR concerns will likely influence Leeds’ transfer strategy this summer, keeping hold of a player like Gnonto could be crucial.
With a valuation as high as £50 million by some estimations, his continued presence could help Leeds not only stay in the Premier League but also thrive.
