Bowen and Wan-Bissaka Form a Promising Duo as West Ham Look for Positives
You get the sense that West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen could strike up chemistry with almost anyone — even a training dummy.
His consistent connection with teammates continues, and right now, it’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka who’s reaping the rewards of that on-pitch understanding.
Right-back Vladimir Coufal has long spoken glowingly about his partnership with Bowen, but recent games have shown that even with Wan-Bissaka’s arrival and Coufal stepping back, the right side of West Ham’s lineup remains one of its strongest assets. Despite the gloom surrounding Graham Potter’s tenure so far, the Wan-Bissaka-Bowen link-up has been a rare bright spot.
Wan-Bissaka has registered three Premier League assists this season — two of them in 2025 alone, both finished off by Bowen.
The most recent came in Sunday’s 1–1 draw against rivals Tottenham Hotspur, when the former Manchester United man teed up Bowen for a composed finish past Guglielmo Vicario.
That followed another assist earlier this year in West Ham’s shock 1–0 win over Arsenal, with Bowen again the beneficiary.
It’s become clear that regardless of who starts at right-back, Bowen brings out the best in them.
Bowen Praises Wan-Bissaka’s Impact Since Joining the Hammers
Manager Graham Potter has taken notice of the growing understanding between Bowen and Wan-Bissaka, and Bowen himself was quick to praise the defender’s consistency and quality since arriving from Old Trafford in the summer.
“He’s been brilliant since day one,” Bowen said. “He’s shown his quality throughout his time in the Premier League, and he’s doing it again for us now.
“He got another assist, and we knew there was a weakness we could exploit. Az [Wan-Bissaka] making those forward runs while they held a high line — it worked perfectly.
“He delivers every week, in games and in training. It’s a pleasure having him here.”
Bowen Responds to Critics as He Grows Into Captaincy Role
While Wan-Bissaka edges closer to his best-ever season in terms of assists, Bowen continues to deliver in front of goal. The England international now has double-digit goals in three of the last four Premier League seasons.
However, wearing the captain’s armband comes with added scrutiny — something Bowen acknowledges. Despite West Ham’s underwhelming season, Bowen has produced three goals and two assists in his last five league games.
“Being captain means you’re in the spotlight,” Bowen admitted. “It hasn’t been the season we hoped for, and people have pointed fingers at me. I get that — I’ve been here long enough, and I won’t shy away from it.
“My ego isn’t bruised when people question me. I turn up every day in training, I try to be the best teammate, the best captain, and show what it means to play for West Ham.
“Maybe I haven’t done enough, given where we are in the table. But I’ll never hide from criticism — I’ll always face it and keep trying.”
