With promotion secured, manager Daniel Farke and his coaching staff must now evaluate the current squad and determine which players are equipped to compete at the highest level. Among those under review is full-back Isaac Schmidt.
Isaac Schmidt’s Future at Leeds in Doubt
Signed from Swiss side St. Gallen at the end of last summer’s transfer window, Isaac Schmidt was brought in to provide depth at full-back. However, the 25-year-old struggled to make an impact, unable to displace Jayden Bogle at right-back or Junior Firpo on the left.
Schmidt failed to start a single Championship game and featured in just 71 minutes across 12 substitute appearances. He was an unused substitute on 22 occasions, highlighting his limited role in the squad.
Recent reports linking Leeds with Bournemouth right-back Max Aarons—a player Farke previously managed at Norwich—suggest the club may be seeking upgrades in Schmidt’s position. This raises further doubts about the Swiss defender’s future at Elland Road.
Why Josuha Guilavogui Should Be Let Go
Another player unlikely to have a future at Leeds in the Premier League is Josuha Guilavogui. The veteran midfielder joined as a free agent in October 2024 to cover for injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev. Despite his experience with clubs like Atletico Madrid, Wolfsburg, and Mainz, Guilavogui played a minimal role.
He made 16 league appearances but did not start any of them and logged fewer minutes than Schmidt. Only five players saw less time on the pitch, all of whom were academy products rather than senior squad members.
With his contract expiring this summer, it would be wise for Leeds to part ways with the 34-year-old. While he served as a reliable emergency option, his limited involvement suggests he is not suited for the demands of Premier League football.
Leeds must now focus on strengthening their squad with players capable of competing at the top level, and that includes replacing fringe players like Guilavogui with higher-quality options.
