Chris Sutton: Even Guardiola or Klopp Couldn’t Guarantee Leeds Survival Over Farke
Chris Sutton believes that even world-class managers like Pep Guardiola or Jürgen Klopp wouldn’t necessarily do a better job than Daniel Farke in keeping Leeds United in the Premier League.
Leeds secured a triumphant return to the top flight by racking up an impressive 100 points during the 2024/25 Championship campaign, finishing the season strongly alongside fellow promotion side Burnley.
After last season’s heartbreak in the play-off final against Southampton, Leeds have finally earned their spot back in the Premier League.
With promotion secured, the focus has shifted to survival. Speculation had arisen around whether Leeds might opt for a manager with more Premier League experience, but chairman Paraag Marathe has confirmed that Daniel Farke will remain in charge.
Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton supports that decision, arguing that familiarity with the squad is more important than a high-profile name.
“If Klopp or Guardiola took charge of Leeds, would their presence guarantee survival?” Sutton asked during the BBC Monday Night Club. “Would they actually do a better job than Farke? He knows these players inside and out. I don’t understand this obsession with needing a Premier League-proven manager.”
Chairman Marathe also acknowledged the recent pressure Farke has been under amid silence from the club’s leadership regarding his future. But he offered a glowing endorsement of the German boss.
“Farke is a calming presence—that’s an understatement,” said Marathe. “He brings composure to the supporters, players, and the club. It’s almost like a superpower.”
Marathe praised Farke’s unwavering belief in the team’s promotion chances—even after a draw against Swansea late in the season.
“When he said he was 100 per cent confident we’d get promoted, he meant it—and I admire him for that,” Marathe added. “He has that unshakeable conviction, and we’re in constant communication.”
