Postecoglou Snaps Back Over Crystal Palace’s Disallowed Goal
Ange Postecoglou offered a blunt response when questioned about Crystal Palace’s disallowed goal during their clash with Tottenham on Sunday.
Palace believed they had opened the scoring in the eighth minute through Ismaila Sarr, following a quick counter-attack.
However, VAR intervened, using semi-automated offside technology to rule the goal out due to an infringement earlier in the build-up.
Replays showed Jean-Philippe Mateta was marginally offside just past the halfway line before Sarr scored, leading to the decision being overturned.
After the match, Postecoglou was asked by talkSPORT about the incident and responded curtly: “It was offside,” adding, “The rules are clear, it was offside, wasn’t it?”
When interviewer Alfie Reynolds suggested there was room for debate over such tight calls, Postecoglou pushed back: “But you just said offside is offside.
So you’re saying sometimes offside isn’t offside? Is that what you’re saying?”
When told that no one inside the stadium had appealed for offside, the Spurs manager replied sarcastically: “So if no one appeals, it’s not offside?”
He continued: “I don’t understand what you’re saying. Offside is a factual call. It’s not up for debate. Unless you’re saying we should change the rules—if so, say that.”
Addressing the idea of changing the offside rule to require a visible gap between players, Postecoglou said: “That’s a separate conversation, but as it stands, that was offside.
You follow the rules. The referee can’t decide to ignore the rule because they don’t like it.”
The Australian was firm in his view: “I couldn’t care less. You play by the rules. We’ve been caught by similar decisions ourselves this season. It’s offside—it’s factual, and that’s why VAR exists.”
Tottenham’s defeat to Palace marked their 20th league loss in 36 matches this season.
With just two games left, they sit 17th in the table and can finish no higher than 13th—guaranteeing their lowest top-flight finish in 21 years and potentially their worst campaign since returning to the Premier League in 1978.
