Tommy Watson Set to Join Brighton from Sunderland This Summer
Sunderland winger Tommy Watson is poised to join Brighton & Hove Albion in the coming weeks, with the Premier League club reportedly planning to integrate him into their first-team squad immediately.
Watson, a product of Sunderland’s academy, will be leaving his boyhood club after Brighton finally succeeded in securing his signature.
A deal worth around £10 million is believed to have been agreed, following a failed approach for the teenager in January.

According to The Athletic, Brighton intend to fast-track Watson into their senior squad next season, rather than easing him in through their under-21 setup.
The report states: “The plan, according to a source granted anonymity to protect relationships, is for Watson to go straight into first-team reckoning next season as another attacking addition to a youthful squad, subject to what happens in pre-season under head coach Fabian Hurzeler.”
The article also notes that Sunderland have always held Watson in high regard—something that has seemingly influenced Brighton’s decision to invest in his potential.
Mixed Reactions to Watson’s Sunderland Departure
Following news of Watson’s impending exit in April, some fans responded negatively, criticizing the young winger for committing to another club before the season’s end.
However, former Sunderland striker Marco Gabbiadini has spoken out in Watson’s defense.
Appearing on BBC Radio Newcastle’s Total Sport, Gabbiadini said: “It seems a little bit brainless to me. It’s modern football.
We’ve got top players in the country who are nearing the end of their contracts, still playing, but already discussing future moves.”
He added: “That’s just the business of football. He’s agreed a deal before the season ends. The club stands to benefit financially—and maybe more in the long run.
He could even return on loan. I’m glad most fans showed him the support he deserves. Who knows? The season might still end on a fairy-tale note for him.”
Watson’s next steps will be closely watched, as he aims to make an impact at Brighton while continuing to develop into one of English football’s promising young talents.
