Leeds United have released a statement addressing an image circulating online that shows captain Ethan Ampadu’s son wearing a Galatasaray jersey.
The club emphasized that Ampadu was not responsible for the image, which was shared by his former partner, and acknowledged the sensitivity of the matter.
The club noted the photo’s potential impact on the families of Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight, two Leeds fans who were tragically killed in Istanbul in 2000 ahead of a UEFA Cup match against Galatasaray.
“Leeds are aware of the image featuring Ethan Ampadu’s son. Ethan and his former partner have been separated for several months, and he bears no responsibility for the post,” the statement read.
“Ethan understands the pain this may cause the Loftus and Speight families and is sensitive to their loss.”
The club urged the public to respect Ampadu’s privacy during this personal matter and praised his leadership throughout the season.
“Our captain has been a strong figure both on and off the pitch, showing dedication to the club, its legacy, and the Leeds community. He has our full support, and no further comment will be made,” the statement concluded.
Leeds United recently earned promotion back to the Premier League after winning the Championship with 100 points, suffering just four defeats all season.
Despite this success, speculation continues around manager Daniel Farke’s future, with reports suggesting the club may look to replace him with someone more experienced in the top tier.
Ampadu featured in 32 matches across all competitions for Leeds this season and played twice for Wales. He missed part of the autumn campaign due to a knee injury sustained in October.
