Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris is hoping to cap off a remarkable debut season in England with promotion to the Premier League, as his side prepares to take on Sheffield United in Saturday’s Championship play-off final at Wembley.
Le Bris arrived on Wearside last June in what was not only his first job outside of France but just his second senior head coaching role.
Since then, both he and the club have experienced a season of growth and unity.
That journey reached a thrilling high when Dan Ballard’s dramatic goal against Coventry City secured a place in the final, triggering scenes Le Bris described as “absolutely beautiful” — a testament to how far the team has come in just one year.
The Frenchman reflected on the strong connection he has built with the club and its supporters, emphasizing how welcomed he felt from day one.
“From the start, the connection here has been fantastic. It was easy to settle in and focus on my work without distractions. That allowed me to express myself and truly enjoy the job,” Le Bris said.
He continued, “Moments like the semi-final show you what this club and its fans are all about. The passion was outstanding — you don’t fully grasp it until you’re part of it. It’s something truly special.”

While promotion would bring huge financial benefits and mark a return to the top flight, Le Bris insists his focus remains strictly on the match itself.
“I know what’s at stake, but I can’t let that distract me. My focus is the game,” he said.
“Whatever happens, the future is still bright. The club is growing, and we’ve had a great season.
But when you have a chance like this, you must go for it — because you never know when it’ll come again.
