Don Goodman: McKenna Has Great Chance to Guide Ipswich Back to Premier League
Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes Kieran McKenna is in a strong position to lead Ipswich Town back to the Premier League next season.
Despite being linked with top-flight roles last summer—including Manchester United, Chelsea, and Brighton—McKenna isn’t expected to be approached by Premier League clubs this time around. Goodman sees that as a blessing in disguise.
“I think Kieran McKenna will look at the Ipswich squad and next season’s Championship and feel confident about pushing for automatic promotion again,” Goodman told FruityKing.
“He’s unlikely to be offered a Premier League job this summer, and that puts him in the perfect place to continue his development and focus on getting Ipswich back up.”
Goodman noted that the only scenario that might change things is if McKenna receives an offer from a club abroad. However, he believes the Blues are well-positioned for another promotion challenge—and McKenna will want to lead it.
Delap Likely to Depart, But Squad Should Stay Intact
One expected departure is striker Liam Delap, who impressed with 12 goals in his debut Premier League campaign. Goodman believes the young forward will have no shortage of offers this summer.
However, he doesn’t foresee a major exodus at Portman Road.
“Other than Delap, I don’t think Ipswich will need to sell anyone,” Goodman said. “None of the other players performed consistently enough to attract serious interest from Premier League clubs.”
He added that the experience of playing top-flight football will benefit the squad if they stay together for another promotion push.
“They’ve learned what the Premier League demands. There’s plenty to be positive about at Ipswich despite the relegation. I’d expect Delap to be the only key player they lose that they’d really want to keep.”
