Ipswich Town Face Uncertainty After Relegation, with Key Departures Likely
Following their relegation from the Premier League, Ipswich Town now face the challenge of avoiding a repeat of Luton Town’s recent misfortune—dropping straight through the top flight into back-to-back relegations.
Like Luton, Ipswich’s rise to the Premier League was a surprise, and while Kieran McKenna will be hoping to emulate the bounce-back success stories of Burnley or Leeds United, a swift return to the top tier is far from guaranteed.
That task becomes even more difficult with the imminent departure of standout striker Liam Delap, who is set to leave Portman Road for Chelsea.
Delap’s Exit a Major Blow
Delap played a crucial role in Ipswich’s 2024/25 Premier League campaign, scoring 12 of the club’s 33 league goals. Despite his best efforts, Ipswich ultimately couldn’t avoid the drop.
His impressive performances didn’t go unnoticed. The young English forward, on loan from Manchester City, drew interest from several Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Newcastle United, Everton, and Chelsea.
According to The Daily Mail, Delap has held talks with four clubs, with his relatively low £30 million release clause making him a highly attractive target. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has since confirmed that Chelsea have won the race for his signature, with Delap set to undergo a medical on Monday ahead of his move to Stamford Bridge.
Morsy’s Future in Question
While Delap’s departure is undoubtedly a major loss, not every exit this summer would be equally damaging. McKenna may need to make tough decisions regarding the squad to ensure Ipswich are ready to compete for promotion.
One such decision could involve long-serving captain Sam Morsy. Despite playing a key role in both of Ipswich’s recent promotions, the Egyptian midfielder struggled in the Premier League, contributing just one goal and one assist in 31 starts—a significant drop from his more productive 2023/24 campaign.
Morsy’s high wages have also become a point of scrutiny. He currently earns £30,000 per week, more than any other first-team player—including standout full-back Leif Davis and even top scorer Liam Delap, who reportedly earned £10,000 less per week.
With Nottingham Forest reportedly interested in Davis, and Morsy’s influence seemingly on the decline, McKenna may consider moving on from his veteran midfielder. While his leadership and experience could be valuable in the Championship, the club might benefit more from reallocating his wages and investing in fresh talent.
Letting Morsy go now, before his form declines further, could be a strategic step in Ipswich’s bid to bounce back to the Premier League.
