Liam Manning Describes Norwich Move as “Too Good to Turn Down” After Shock Bristol City Exit
Liam Manning has called his appointment as Norwich City head coach an opportunity he simply couldn’t refuse, following his unexpected departure from Bristol City this summer.
The Norwich-born coach guided Bristol City to a Championship play-off spot last season, clinching sixth place on the final day at the expense of Middlesbrough.
The Robins finished 11 points ahead of Norwich, who parted ways with head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup with two games left, effectively ending their own play-off hopes.
Despite Bristol City’s strong campaign, reports suggest Manning harbored concerns over the club’s summer budget and long-term ambitions.
These doubts may have influenced his surprise move in what’s shaping up to be a busy off-season in the Championship.
Though Manning has spoken respectfully about his former club, his comments have hinted at unease over the direction at Ashton Gate.
In his first interview as Norwich boss, Manning expressed excitement about the role:
“I’m privileged and honoured to have the opportunity to work for this fantastic football club. It’s a wonderful club with a big history and tradition.
When I spoke to Ben [Knapper] and the owners, I was really impressed by their vision and strategy for the club’s future.
There was a clear alignment with how I believe the game should be played and how players should be developed – it’s something I was eager to be part of.
A lot of good work has already been done in recent seasons, and now it’s about building on that. I’m looking forward to meeting the fans and giving them a team they can be proud of.”
Manning also addressed Bristol City fans in a statement released via the League Managers Association, saying:
“As is often the case in football, things evolve and change. It was a difficult decision to leave, but a new and exciting opportunity to progress my managerial career came along.”
With Manning’s move to Carrow Road, Norwich will be hoping to mount a strong push for the top six again next season. Meanwhile, Bristol City are now in the market for a new head coach – as are Middlesbrough, following Michael Carrick’s recent sacking.
Carrick has been linked with a swift return to the dugout at Ashton Gate, while Rob Edwards is reportedly on the radar of both clubs.
If concerns about Bristol’s future direction played a role in Manning’s exit, Middlesbrough could have the upper hand in attracting shared managerial targets.
