Newly promoted Premier League sides Burnley and Sunderland are both being linked with a move for a highly rated striker from Ligue 1—though they may face a hefty price tag in the future.
Burnley secured their return to the top flight by finishing second in the Championship, just a year after being relegated under Vincent Kompany.
Now managed by Scott Parker, the Clarets are preparing for life back in the Premier League alongside Sunderland, who booked their spot with a dramatic play-off final win over Sheffield United at Wembley after overcoming Coventry City in the semi-finals.
The victory marks Sunderland’s return to the Premier League after an eight-year absence.
Both clubs have been busy early in the summer transfer window. Sunderland have seen Jobe Bellingham and Tommy Watson leave for Borussia Dortmund and Brighton, respectively, but confirmed the permanent signing of Enzo Le Fée by triggering a £20 million clause activated upon their promotion.
Burnley have also focused on turning key loan signings into permanent additions. Bashir Humphreys, Marcus Edwards, Jaidon Anthony, and Zian Flemming have all committed their futures to Turf Moor after playing a part in last season’s promotion campaign.
Now, both clubs are reportedly in the mix for another exciting talent. According to Sky France journalist Sacha Taviolieri, Burnley and Sunderland—along with Brentford—are showing strong interest in Nantes striker Matthis Abline.
The 22-year-old scored 11 goals in 36 games last season and is currently representing France at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Slovakia.
Abline played over an hour in France’s opening 0-0 draw with Portugal and is expected to feature again in their next group match against Georgia.
Clubs across Europe are monitoring Abline’s progress, and sources suggest that Burnley and Sunderland could land a “special talent” if they win the race for his signature this summer.

Spanish journalist Andrés Onrubia Ramos shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “It’s unbelievable that a striker with Abline’s talent isn’t playing in a major European league.
He was one of the few positives in France’s U21 performance against Portugal.
His technique is superb, he’s unstoppable when in stride, and he can play both centrally and on the right. This tournament could be a breakthrough for him.”
When a follower commented that Nantes’ asking price would have to drop below €25 million, Ramos responded, “I think he’ll be worth more than €50 million in a few years.”
