Trai Hume Eager for Premier League Test as Sunderland Gear Up for Top-Flight Return
Sunderland are set to make their long-awaited return to the Premier League next season, and defender Trai Hume is already looking ahead to some of the standout fixtures on the horizon.
The Northern Ireland international played a vital role in Sunderland’s promotion campaign and, like many of his teammates, will now get his first taste of Premier League football.
Speaking while on international duty, Hume shared his excitement about the step up to the top tier, though he admitted pre-season training might not be as appealing.
“I’m really looking forward to it all,” he said. “I’m probably not as excited about pre-season – it’s going to be a bit tougher – but that’s just part of it. I know I’ll have to work harder than ever because it’s a big step up, playing in the best league in the world. It’ll be tough, but I’m excited for the challenge. It’s something all of us at Sunderland are ready for, and hopefully we can hit the ground running.”
When asked about the fixtures he’s anticipating most, Hume didn’t hesitate: “I’d be lying if I said the derby [against Newcastle] wasn’t top of the list. I was a Chelsea fan growing up, so playing them home and away will be special. But the derby’s the big one.”
A Player Happy at the Club
Despite speculation linking him with a potential summer move, Hume has reaffirmed his commitment to Sunderland and his love for playing at the Stadium of Light.
“I’ve said it ever since I arrived – I love my football here,” he said. “I enjoy playing, I love the club, and I’m happy. If anything changes, that’s down to the club, but I’m happy where I am and I love being a Sunderland player.”
Reflecting on the club’s dramatic play-off run, Hume praised the unity and resilience of the squad across three hard-fought matches.
“We didn’t dominate every game, but we dug deep and stuck together. That’s how I like to win – as a team. We had to work incredibly hard, and those two late goals brought a mix of relief, joy, and every emotion you can imagine.”
As the Premier League fixture list looms, both Hume and Sunderland fans alike will be eager to see what the upcoming season holds.
