Sunderland Linked with Charlie Cresswell as Defender Hints at Future Premier League Ambitions
Charlie Cresswell, recently linked with a move to Sunderland, has revealed his desire to one day play in the Premier League, though he insists he is in no hurry to make that move.
The 22-year-old centre-back left Leeds United last summer to join French side Toulouse, where he has made a strong impression, featuring in 34 games across all competitions this season.
Reports suggest Sunderland’s recruitment team see Cresswell as an “ideal target” as they prepare for their return to the Premier League next season, according to French outlet Jeunes Footeux.
However, in a detailed interview with Sky Sports earlier this year, Cresswell expressed satisfaction with his current development and experience in France, emphasizing his contentment with the progress he’s making.
Cresswell Reflects on His Time at Toulouse
When asked about adapting to French football, Cresswell said: “It’s been an incredible experience. I’ve loved every moment. It’s been challenging, but I’m embracing it.
Last season, I didn’t play much at Leeds, so I had time to think. Toulouse had a clear vision and project for me, which was exciting, and I wanted to be part of it.”
He also noted the improvements he’s made since leaving England: “Definitely, I’ve improved technically and tactically. I feel much more comfortable now.
The style here is different—less intense and physical than England, with more focus on tactics and technique. It’s helping me develop my football intelligence.”
Regarding a potential Premier League return, Cresswell added: “I’d like to play in England again one day, but there’s no rush.
I’m enjoying playing regularly here, and we’re currently 10th with a chance at European football. I still have plenty to work on, so we’ll see what happens.”
On his connection to Leeds United, Cresswell said: “Leeds will always be a huge part of my life.
I spent 10 years there, and my younger brother is still trying to break through. I’m still a fan and follow their games. Leeds gave me my start, and that bond won’t ever fade.”
