Motherwell Boss Responds to Lennon Miller Transfer Speculation as Interest Grows
New Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou has addressed the mounting transfer speculation surrounding highly rated midfielder Lennon Miller.
The 18-year-old, who recently earned his first senior cap for Scotland, is drawing serious interest from Sunderland, Celtic, and Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt after an exceptional breakout season in the Scottish Premiership.
With just one year remaining on his contract at Fir Park, Miller—valued at approximately £10 million—has emerged as one of the most in-demand young midfielders in the UK.
Speaking during his official unveiling as Motherwell boss on Wednesday, Askou acknowledged the growing interest in Miller, admitting that a move could happen this summer.
“There probably is [interest], but it’s not been my main focus today, so I’ll need to get an update,” Askou said. “I know he’s a fantastic player who has just made his debut for the national team.
He’s a big name for Motherwell and Scottish football, and there’s no doubt he’ll have a strong international future.”
“We’ll see over time whether this summer is when he takes the next step. There’s a lot of talk and high expectations—understandably so, given how well he’s performed.
I haven’t met him yet as he’s been given a few extra days off, so I think it’s only fair to have those conversations with him first before commenting further on his future.”
Breakout Season Sparks Premier League Interest
Miller featured in 41 games for Motherwell during the 2024–25 season, contributing two goals and five assists while playing primarily in central midfield.
Known for his composure, passing range, and press resistance, Miller has consistently drawn comparisons to seasoned professionals, despite his age.
Sunderland are reportedly keeping a close eye on the situation. The newly promoted Premier League club see Miller as a potential long-term asset who aligns well with their youth-focused recruitment model.
Why Lennon Miller Is in High Demand
Miller not only stood out in terms of minutes played—logging more game time (3,084 minutes) and more appearances (32) than any other 16–19-year-old in the division—but also for the quality of his performances.
He led all teenagers in the Scottish Premiership for combined goals and assists (10), and topped the expected goals and assists (xG+xA) chart with 10.36.
His eight assists tied him for first overall in the league, regardless of age, and his league-best expected assists (xA) figure of 6.55 highlights his elite creative output.
Statistically, he also stood out as the most incisive passer among his age group, leading the way in several key metrics:

- Final-third entries: 222

These numbers underline Miller’s role as a technically gifted playmaker, capable of linking play and driving forward with purpose.
He was also among the league’s top teenage ball carriers, second only to Kilmarnock’s Bobby Wales in chance creation through forward runs and dribbling. His consistent performance at such a young age earned him two senior caps for Scotland.
