West Ham United Urgently Need Midfield Reinforcements Ahead of New Season
West Ham United are in serious need of midfield reinforcements, with a clear lack of quality in the engine room becoming increasingly evident.
The Hammers have already missed out on key targets. Angel Gomes opted to join Olympique Marseille, while another potential signing, Ardon Jashari of Club Brugge, is now attracting interest from AC Milan.
Now, the East London club risks losing out on another promising target—despite his relatively modest price—amid growing interest from top European clubs.
According to Ge Globo, Atlético Madrid and FC Porto have joined the race for Palmeiras’ dynamic midfielder Richard Ríos, a player West Ham previously pursued.
The Hammers submitted a €25 million bid last summer, which Palmeiras rejected. The Brazilian club are reportedly holding out for closer to €30 million this time around.
Ríos, known for his tireless work rate and physical presence, has impressed scouts during his performances at the FIFA Club World Cup.
Against Porto, he stood out by winning six of 13 duels, completing all three of his dribbles, and contributing with two interceptions, a tackle, and a clearance.
Earlier in the tournament, Ríos delivered another strong showing in Palmeiras’ 2-0 victory over Al Ahly, winning eight of 13 duels.
The 25-year-old’s form has not only been strong at club level but also for the Colombian national team, further increasing his appeal.
Ríos would add much-needed steel and dynamism to West Ham’s midfield—qualities the current squad is sorely lacking.
Capable of playing both as a number six and eight, his presence would be an immediate upgrade.
With other clubs circling, West Ham must act fast if they want to secure his signature. Based on his recent performances, especially at the Club World Cup, the time to move is now.
