However, with Mepham no longer at the club, Sunderland may need reinforcements at centre-back to handle the demands of Premier League football.

While his versatility, including the ability to play in midfield, adds value, Sunderland can’t afford to take risks at the back.

Enter Joe Gomez. According to The Guardian, Sunderland are among several clubs—including Newcastle, Aston Villa, Burnley, and Leeds—interested in the Liverpool defender.
Securing Gomez would be a coup. Dubbed “outstanding” by teammate Virgil van Dijk, the 28-year-old has only conceded 106 goals across 149 Premier League games. His positional versatility—able to play across the backline and as a defensive midfielder—would be a huge asset for head coach Régis Le Bris.
With two Premier League titles to his name, Gomez represents the level of ambition Sunderland must now show. Signing him would signal they’re serious about staying up—rather than settling for sentiment.
