Leeds United Eye Move for Newcastle Goalkeeper Nick Pope
Leeds United are reportedly considering a summer swoop for Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope, according to Mirror journalist Simon Mullock.
The Whites have earmarked the England international as a possible replacement for current No.1 Illan Meslier and are optimistic their chances of securing a deal could improve depending on Newcastle’s transfer activity.
Eddie Howe’s side are said to be closing in on the signing of Burnley keeper James Trafford — a move that could see Pope lose his starting spot at St James’ Park.
Leeds are keeping a close watch on the situation, hoping that Pope’s availability could open the door for a transfer that would strengthen their bid for Premier League survival.
Premier League Experience on Leeds’ Radar
Leeds, fresh off their Championship title-winning campaign, have already made early moves in the transfer market, bringing in striker Lukas Nmecha and defender Jaka Bijol.
They’re also reportedly nearing a deal for Wolfsburg centre-back Sebastiaan Bornauw, with a four-year contract said to be on the table.
Adding Pope to the squad would inject valuable top-flight experience into Daniel Farke’s team.
The 33-year-old has made 221 Premier League appearances and remains under contract with Newcastle until June 2026 on a reported £100,000-a-week deal.
Last season, Pope made 28 league appearances for the Magpies, keeping eight clean sheets and conceding 35 goals.
A knee injury sidelined him for over two months mid-season, but he returned in time to feature in Newcastle’s final 13 games.
